Walter Reade Theater Presents Film Comment Selects 2046 with Wong Kar-wai in Person

On Wednesday, June 15, FILM COMMENT SELECTS will present a special screening of 2046 with director Wong Kar-wai introducing and answering questions following the screening.

2046 (China/France/Germany/Hong Kong, 2004; 129m) feels less like a sequel to In the Mood for Love than a second movement in a cinematic symphony the emotional core of the earlier film is exposed, its spatial precision deepened, its sense of longing stretched to infinity. The titular number is many things at once the year when mainland China assumes absolute control of Hong Kong; the number of the hotel room across from Tony Leung’s Mr. Chow, inhabited by a parade of women he pursues and discards; and the place where disappointed lovers escape to in Chow’s erotic sci-fi novel.

Wong’s concentration and control of the Scope frame, of light, of color, of the minutest gestures are almost beyond imagining. The action may be set in a series of rooms and corridors, but 2046 unfurls in the limitless expanse of memory and imagination, where reality and fiction, life lived and life remembered, dissolve into an ocean of regret and yearning. Tony Leung’s reprisal of the affable, self-mocking Mr. Chow, this time with a bitter edge, is extraordinary. Faye Wong, Carina Lau, Gong Li, Maggie Cheung, and an electrifying Ziyi Zhang are the women in his life, vivid as ghosts from a forgotten past.

Published bi-monthly, Film Comment magazine features the best writing around on new international and American cinema. Full information at www.filmcomment.com.
